Basic Positional Play Tips For Texas Holdem

Position plays a very important role in all forms of poker, especially so in Texas Holdem. The value of position is greatly underestimated by amateur players, so it is something that you should be aware of at all times during a poker game and should use it to influence every decision you make.

Your position at the poker table is constantly changing relative to the position of the dealer, which moves around the table to the next player in an clockwise direction after each hand. Therefore each player at the table would have been in a similar position as another player at one point during each orbit.

There are numerous positions at the poker table, which are named depending on where you are sitting relative to the dealer. Players that are one of the first to act on each betting round after the flop are described as being in ‘early position’, and are sat to the left of the dealer.

Players that are one of the last to act on each betting round are described as being in ‘late position’, and will be sat to the right of the dealer. The players sat in between these two extremes are therefore called ‘middle position’.

The players with the most advantageous position are the ones sitting in ‘late position’. This is because they will always be the last to act on each betting round during the hand and will have the opportunity to see how their opponents act before making their play.

For example if you are last to act and your opponent checks, you may be able to run a successful bluff because your opponent has shown weakness and you can act upon it. Where as if you were last to act, it would be difficult to determine whether or not you could get your opponent off the hand because you have yet to see them act.
