  • How To Play Traditional Rummy Online

online rummy rulesFor the player new to the card game of online Rummy, part of the fun and excitement of mastering Traditional Rummy Rules includes understanding much of the basic terminology of the game. Players may think that they have been transported into a foreign country when they hear other experienced players discussing melds, deadwood, and chumming. But don’t be frightened away from the lingo! Along with some pointers and explanations of a few of the online Rummy Rules, here are some of the more colorful and interesting definitions in Rummy-speak.

    Aces High or Aces Low

In Traditional Rummy Rules, the value of the Ace card is set to the lowest value of one point. However there are variations of the game which permit the assignment of only low point values to the Ace card or high point values. So for example, in Aces High an allowable meld run set may be Queen – King – Ace, but a three-card run of Ace – Two – Three would not be permitted. Additional variations of the game may allow that Aces be both high or low as desired, and this particular rule may come into play through another term called “Round-the-corner” (see further definitions below).

    Chumming

Traditional Rummy Rules do not preclude the players from trying to trick one another into discarding cards that their opponent may actually need to form a meld. In fact, much of the enjoyment of the game encourages such behavior! Chumming is also referred to by several other terms, including “Advertising”, “Baiting”, “Salesman”, “Fishing”, and even “Tempting”. To successfully bait an opponent, in Traditional Rummy Rules the player will intentionally discard a specific card (often in the same suit or rank that the player truly needs to form a meld), and hope that the opponent takes the bait and discards another of that desired suit or rank.

    Other Rummy Terminology

“Deadwood” cards are those cards in your hand that you should try to discard since you cannot use them in your melds. You may also hope to add some of your deadwood to another player’s melds if they knock to try and win the game. “Melds”, or legitimate groupings of cards, can be either a Set of cards sharing the same value (such as three Queens), or a sequential Run of at least three cards in sequential order and all within the same suit (for example, a Seven, Eight and Nine card all within the Clubs suit). “Round the Corner” is an allowable exception to Traditional Rummy Rules when valuing the Ace card, and it permits the Ace to be used in sequence within a Run Meld (for example, a King, Queen, Ace and Two card within the same suit).

    Playing the Game

To play a game of Rummy, the Traditional Rummy Rules are fairly straightforward and simple to follow. Your ultimate goal is to take as many cards in your hand as possible and assemble or organize them into melds, either in sequential runs (such as a Four, Five and Six card) all from the same suit (such as Diamonds), or in sets of the same value card (such as four Nines or three Threes). While working on the first goal, you should also aim to discard as many of the unmatched deadwood cards in your hand as possible. With a little practice, Traditional Rummy Rules will become second nature in no time!
